When your mind won't stop: signs that your brain is in survival mode

By Arantxa Pisón, licensed health psychologist, register no. G-2337 · Updated on 15 November 2025

Do you ever feel that your mind never rests, not even when you are exhausted? You think, analyse, plan, worry… and still nothing seems to change. Your head won’t switch off, your body tenses up, and even the smallest decisions become a maze. You are not broken. Your brain is doing what it does best: protecting you. Living under constant stress affects not only your mood, but also the way your mind works. When the threat becomes chronic — whether from excessive demands, pressure at work, grief or emotional conflicts — the brain activates its most primitive defence mode: survival mode.

What living in “survival mode” means

When you are in that state, your nervous system behaves as if everything were urgent or dangerous. The amygdala, the fear centre, takes control, and the prefrontal cortex, the rational part that analyses and decides, shuts down. The result:

It’s not that you lack willpower. It’s that your mind has been hijacked by fear. Joseph LeDoux demonstrated this in his studies on the emotional brain: when a stimulus generates fear, the brain activates a “fast route” that bypasses conscious thought. Years later, Richard Davidson showed that, with mental and emotional training, we can re-educate the brain and take back control.

🧩 Your mind isn’t broken, it’s overloaded. It just needs to feel safe again to regain clarity.

Signs that you are in survival mode

It isn’t always noticeable. Sometimes there is no obvious crisis, but there is a constant feeling of being “stuck”. Survival mode doesn’t shout; it whispers in the form of mental exhaustion, indecision or apathy. These are some signs that your nervous system is on alert:

What is happening is not that you don’t want to change, but that your body doesn’t feel safe enough to do so. As long as your brain perceives danger, even if it is emotional or symbolic, it will keep that “handbrake” on.

Why you can’t get out of it alone (and it has nothing to do with weakness)

When you try to get out of the block through willpower alone, you are using the rational part of the brain… but the one in charge at that moment is the emotional system. It’s like trying to convince fear with logical arguments. It doesn’t work, because fear doesn’t reason: it feels. This is where deep therapeutic work comes in. Combining techniques such as biodecoding, transgenerational work and applied neuroscience makes it possible to re-educate the system from the ground up, helping body and mind to leave defence mode and return to connection. This is not a process of talking endlessly about the past, but of reprogramming how you experience it today. When you change your perception, you change your chemistry. And when you change your chemistry, your energy, your clarity and your ability to decide change too.

How to start regaining clarity and direction

Getting out of the block isn’t about forcing yourself to “be positive” or repeating empty affirmations. It’s about retraining your mind and body so that they feel safe moving forward again. Change happens when:

This doesn’t happen overnight, but it can happen within a few weeks if you work with the right approach: one that combines deep understanding and practical action.

The “Conscious Decision” Programme: from chaos to clarity in 5 sessions

I created this programme for people who feel they have already analysed too much, but aren’t moving forward. It is designed to help you regain your willpower, your energy and your direction. Over 5 sessions, we work step by step on:

  1. An X-ray of where you are now – understanding what is blocking you on an emotional, mental and biographical level.
  2. Identifying the block – finding the root: trauma, a belief or an invisible inheritance.
  3. A change of perspective – reinterpreting your story from a freer and more conscious place.
  4. Practical reprogramming – applying simple tools that transform your mental and emotional routines.
  5. Closure and autonomy – integrating the progress you have made and leaving with clarity and a direction of your own.

It’s an intense process, but a short one. In a few weeks you can notice a real transformation: less mental noise, more focus, more energy.

If you feel ready to move forward

Sometimes you don’t need to be “completely ready”. All it takes is the first conscious step. 🌀 Regain your power to decide. 🌿 Reconnect with your vital energy. ☀️ Feel clarity and direction again. 👉 Find out how I can support you in the Conscious Decision Programme and take the step towards the next version of yourself.
