Emotional inheritance: how your family's past shapes the decisions you make today

By Arantxa Pisón, licensed health psychologist, register no. G-2337 · Updated on 15 November 2025

When you try to move forward in your life, but something invisible always seems to push you back to the same place, it may not be mere coincidence. Sometimes the decisions we believe are our own are shaped by the stories, fears or loyalties we have inherited from previous generations. It’s not about blaming the past, but about understanding how it lives in us.

The invisible marks of the family

We are born into a system that existed before us: with its rules, silences, wounds and ways of loving. From an early age, we absorb not only the words, but also the emotions that float in the air: the anxiety that goes unspoken, the sacrifice that becomes normal, the fear that disguises itself as caution.

Many of our adult behaviours —such as finding it hard to set boundaries, the fear of disappointing others or the constant need for control— may have their roots in those unspoken family memories. It’s as if we carried on our skin the echoes of stories that nobody ever fully told, but which we keep acting out unconsciously.

Studies in epigenetics and transgenerational psychology show that intense emotional experiences can leave marks on gene expression and on patterns of behaviour. In other words, we inherit not only physical traits, but also learned emotional responses.

Recognising this doesn’t mean resigning yourself to fate, but opening up the possibility of choosing more freely: when you understand where what you feel comes from, it no longer controls you, and you can transform it.

Invisible loyalties: when we repeat what we swore to avoid

Sometimes we promise to be the complete opposite of what we saw at home. “I’m not going to put up with what my mother put up with.” “I’ll never be as demanding as my father.” And yet, without realising it, we end up repeating the same patterns.

This happens because, at an unconscious level, part of us seeks to belong to the family system. That need for loyalty can be so strong that we would rather repeat the pain than feel like “traitors” to our own story.

These invisible loyalties show up in our professional, emotional and personal lives:

It’s not a life sentence, but a misunderstood faithfulness. The childlike love that binds us to our origins can also keep us tied to their limits. But adult love understands that honouring the past doesn’t mean copying it, but learning from it and moving forward with awareness.

Freeing yourself from these dynamics means looking with compassion, not with judgement. It’s not about pointing fingers, but about acknowledging the whole story —pain included— so that you can write a new version.

How to break the cycle: healing without giving up your story

Breaking a family pattern doesn’t mean cutting yourself off from your past, but no longer living conditioned by it. It means moving from repeating out of unconscious loyalty to choosing consciously.

The first step is to observe without judgement. When you manage to see that many of your reactions don’t come from the present, but from inherited memories, something loosens inside. You stop feeling defective and begin to understand yourself with compassion.

Then comes emotional reprogramming, a process that brings together mind, body and emotion:

These transformations don’t happen through talking alone, but by living corrective experiences, in which your nervous system learns that it can feel safe when acting differently. That’s where biodecoding, transgenerational work and integrative psychological therapy meet: they help your mind and body to rewrite emotional memory.

When you heal a pattern, you don’t only free yourself: you free those who come after you. The awareness you gain becomes a legacy.

Healing is not turning your back on your family. It’s being grateful for what you received, letting go of what doesn’t belong to you and allowing yourself to create your own version of the story.
