What is maturity?
It is the full development that we always reach physically, but it is easy to get lost when it comes to the emotional side.
Maturing means living in peace, accepting that there are certain things we cannot change, trying not to let what others do or think of us affect us, finding balance and no longer denying reality.
These signs of emotionally immature people, set against those of more mature people, can give us an idea of when someone is truly mature, halfway there, or has not grown emotionally.
HOW AN EMOTIONALLY IMMATURE PERSON THINKS
- People’s behaviour is down to what they feel about me. They act to annoy me and everything has to do with me.
- Boundaries are offensive or selfish; I have rights, not duties.
- When things don’t go my way, I complain, I give up or I play the victim.
- I have zero tolerance for anyone who doesn’t agree with my beliefs.
- I find my worth through external validation. My relationships are toxic.
HOW AN EMOTIONALLY MATURE PERSON THINKS
- People’s behaviour is down to how they feel about themselves.
- Boundaries are my right to protect my energy and my self-love.
- When things don’t go my way, I trust that I’ll find a new path.
- What people believe is their own perspective, based on their conditioning and personal history.
- I validate myself and acknowledge myself. My relationships are spaces of mutual connection.
Growing emotionally is always enriching, but if something is keeping you anchored and stuck as you discover your own maturity, going to therapy will help you find out what it is so that you can keep growing as a person.
