Mature psychology: after 45, it's the truth that moves us

By Arantxa Pisón, licensed health psychologist, register no. G-2337

There is something that happens with age that hardly anyone says out loud:

As the years go by, our tolerance for the superficial decreases.

At 20, you can still get caught up in personas, trends, validation or aspirational narratives. But after a certain age, the human mind begins to look for something else:

Emotional truth.

Why many mature adults feel disconnected from today’s psychology content

That is why many people over 45 feel disconnected from today’s psychology content.

Not because they are “out of date”.
But because they have developed psychological depth.

They no longer want pretty theories.
They want real tools.

They want to understand why they have spent years running on autopilot.

They don’t want to look as if they are evolving.
They want to rest mentally.

Emotional maturity as something of enormous value

And this is where a very interesting phenomenon appears:

Emotional maturity becomes something of enormous value.

Because people with more life experience consume more consciously, invest more in wellbeing, prioritise quality over impulse, and understand that mental health affects relationships, the body, money and the sense of meaning in life.

The problem is that hardly anyone speaks to them directly.
Because nobody sees them.

Everything seems designed for a youthful emotional aesthetic:

aestheticised anxiety,
fast connections,
liquid identity,
overstimulation,
constant dopamine.

The language of mature psychology

But mature psychology speaks a different language.

It speaks of:

existential emptiness,
silent exhaustion,
long marriages,
redefining desire,
fear of time passing,
children who have grown up,
ageing parents,
success without satisfaction,
and the strange feeling of having lived for everyone except yourself.

That is not a lack of ambition.
It is awareness.

No longer buying into empty promises

And when someone reaches that point, they stop buying into empty promises.

They start looking for presence.
Clarity.
Depth.
Conversations that don’t infantilise their experience.

People over 45 don’t want to be young again.
They want to feel alive again.

And psychologically, that difference is huge.

Because they are no longer trying to become someone.
They are trying to return to themselves.

If what is described here feels familiar and you are looking for a psychological space that doesn’t infantilise what you have lived through, we can work together. In person in Vigo, or in an online session from wherever you are.
