Psychological therapies
One of the most effective therapies for treating anxiety is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). CBT focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and problematic behaviours. If you tend to think “I’ll never get this right”, CBT will help you to challenge that thought and change it into something more positive and realistic.
Types of therapy:
- Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT): This therapy focuses on changing negative thought patterns and problematic behaviours. By working with a therapist, you will learn to challenge these thoughts and replace them with more realistic and positive ones.
- Exposure therapy: It helps you to face your fears gradually, reducing the anxiety associated with them. If you are afraid of flying, this therapy might begin with simply thinking about flying and, over time, progress to boarding a plane.
- Group therapy: It provides social support and the opportunity to share experiences with others who face similar problems, which can be very comforting.
- Mindfulness and meditation: They teach you to be present and to reduce stress. They include breathing exercises and guided meditation, which help to calm the mind and the body.
Self-help techniques
As well as therapy, there are many self-help techniques you can build into your daily life. Regular exercise is an excellent way to reduce anxiety. Activities such as running, swimming or doing yoga release endorphins, which are hormones that improve your mood. Breathing and relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing and progressive muscle relaxation, can calm the nervous system. Keeping a balanced diet and healthy habits is also crucial. Avoiding excessive caffeine and alcohol, and making sure you get enough sleep, can make a big difference to how you feel.
Here is a challenge for you: try building some of these changes into your daily routine and notice how you feel after a few weeks.
- Swap coffee for relaxing herbal teas: You will notice a reduction in your anxiety levels and you will probably improve the quality of your sleep.
- Add a 20-minute walk every day: This not only improves your physical fitness, it also clears your mind and reduces stress.
- Add more fruit and vegetables to your diet: You will have more energy and feel less heavy after meals.
I’ll confess that when I started making changes to my lifestyle, I found it really hard. I used to depend on coffee… But, little by little, you get there. I began to notice that I was sleeping better and that my anxiety levels were going down. You can do it too!
Complementary therapies
Complementary therapies, such as yoga and music therapy, can be very beneficial for people who suffer from anxiety. Yoga combines physical exercise and breathing techniques, which can help to reduce anxiety and improve overall wellbeing. Music therapy uses music to promote relaxation and emotional expression, which can be especially useful for those who find it difficult to put their feelings into words.
Yoga
Practising yoga not only improves flexibility and strength, it also helps to reduce stress and anxiety. By focusing on your breathing and on the movements of your body, you can find greater calm and balance.
Music therapy
Listening to relaxing music or taking part in music-making activities can have a deeply calming effect. Music has the power to change our mood and reduce stress levels. I recommend looking on YouTube for a playlist of relaxing music. You’ll be surprised how much it can help!
What about medication?
Although medication can be useful for some people, it is important to be cautious and always to consult a health professional before starting any drug treatment. Medicines such as anxiolytics and antidepressants can help to control the symptoms of anxiety, but they can also have side effects and are not a long-term solution for everyone.
If you feel overwhelmed by anxiety, talking to your doctor about the possibility of medication can be an important step. But remember, medication is only one part of the treatment. Combined with therapy and self-help techniques, it can be an effective tool.
