Menopause isn't only hormonal: it's psychological

By Arantxa Pisón, licensed health psychologist, register no. G-2337

There are women who reach menopause feeling that something inside them has disappeared.

And they can’t always explain it.

Because it isn’t only about the body.
Or insomnia.
Or hormonal changes.
Not even tiredness.

It’s about identity.

In menopause, life still demands the same as ever

Suddenly your emotions, energy, desire, patience, memory, tolerance and the way you inhabit yourself all change. And while all that is happening, life keeps demanding exactly the same:

Keep working.
Keep caring for others.
Keep holding everything up.
Keep functioning.

As if nothing were happening.

But something is happening.

“And what became of me?”

Menopause often forces a woman to look at herself again after decades of living outwards.

After years of being a mother, a partner, a professional, a carer or everyone’s emotional support, a silent question appears:

“And what became of me?”

Because there is a kind of tiredness that a weekend of rest doesn’t cure.

It is the tiredness of having put yourself on hold for too long.

The body also asks for truth

The relationship with desire changes too.
With the body.
With sexuality.
With the way you feel seen.

Many women go through this stage feeling guilty for not having the same energy as before. Or ashamed to admit that they no longer want to live to meet other people’s expectations.

But perhaps menopause doesn’t come to take femininity away.

Perhaps it comes to dismantle personas.

At this age, noise, empty relationships and constant self-demand are no longer tolerated in the same way. The body begins to ask for truth.

An uncomfortable stage that can be deeply honest

Although socially it is presented as an uncomfortable stage, psychologically it can also become a deeply honest one.

Because for the first time in many years, some women begin to ask themselves:

what they really need,
how they want to live,
what they are no longer willing to put up with,
and what a life would look like in which they were a priority too.

Menopause doesn’t always destroy a version of you.

Sometimes it frees one that has been waiting decades to appear.

If you are going through this stage and feel you need a space of your own where you don’t have to explain or justify what is happening to you, I can support you. I work in person in Vigo, and also in online sessions.
